I took my dads Civic in for the driver side airbag recall the other day. They finished within an hour, and after having TWO donuts, I went on my way. Apparently they have a thing for 16 year old economy cars (stick shift: ooh la la) and want to set up the next date.

If it’s a date with one of these, hard pass, then puke in a bucket:

I had my 03 Odyssey in the shop a couple of weeks ago and my service rep showed me an internal Honda memo that somebody died in an 01 Civic just a month or so ago. The car had been sold numerous times and the initial recall had never been performed. This is the second time they’ve replaced the inflator in my Odyssey.

They had to do the same job twice?  Was there a recall of a recall?  A couple family members have Hondas and I’ve forwarded the recall info and VIN check to them, as they haven’t gotten anything in the mail or by phone.

Yes, there was a recall of the recall. They did it while I was in the shop, and I got a letter from Honda yesterday. They also have a quiet recall on my wife’s 13 Civic. They have extended the warranty, and while they won’t replace it if you just bring it in, any problem you might have with the airbag will result in the inflator being swapped under the extended warranty. I’m thinking of pulling the fuse and taking it in and saying that the light is on.

Yep, some cars got recalled twice. Because the defect takes time to become dangerous, some early recalls were performed with known bad airbags. They knew that they would still be much safer (at least for several years) than the original ones, so they put them in knowing they’d probably have to redo them again once sufficient supplies were available.
